Maca is an extraordinary plant that grows at an altitude of 3800 m in extreme acid volcanic soil rich in minerals and other important active nutrients. It has been discovered and used in everyday diet by the Inca who also gave it its name. Fresh or dried maca root has been used in Peru for centuries, and it represents an important part of local cuisine. Maca is rich in minerals, vitamins, essential amino acids (it contains nineteen out of twenty amino acids), unsaturated fats and other substances important to our organism. It contains calcium, selenium, zinc, sodium, iron, potassium, magnesium, silicon, iodine, phosphorus, manganese, copper, vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, C, E, and D3, unsaturated fats omega-3, -6, and -9, and many active substances that have positive impacts on our body (saponins, sterols, tannins, and alkaloids).
Numerous researchers have proven the influence of maca to the endocrine system, both in men and women. It has positive effects on the hypothalamic-adenohypophyseal axis and adrenals, it regulates the function of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, encourages human gonads functions, and improves immune system.
